Before Enlightenment...

I woke this morning with this saying running through my mind, "Before enlightenment... chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment... chop wood, carry water." It made me smile. And reminded me that I still had work to do after yesterday's workshop.

There was a time when I was less than thrilled with the mundane chores that were necessary when seeing clients or offering a workshop. I used to think that the cleaning and preparation was something to be endured before I could get to the 'fun' part of working with Sacred concepts and Healing frequencies and energies.

Now I know that everything I do to prepare for a client or group is Sacred. The cleaning, doing laundry, printing, organizing and planning is every bit as important as the actual event. It sets the stage and prepares me for what is about to unfold.

What used to be 'mindless' chores has become loving meditations. I know that when I am cleaning the washroom for the third time in any given day that my client will have the benefit of utilizing a clean space. When my home is aired out frequently it offers those who come here with a space where they won't be bothered by unpleasant smells. When my crystals are dust free they better share their beauty and energies. And I know that my doing a lot of laundry allows clients to lie on a clean surface prepared just for them.

I also better understand the meaning of, "Before enlightenment.... chop wood, carry water."

A Lovely Snow Memory

Over the past several weeks the Atlantic Coast has been bombarded with Snow. Because of this I had been feeling less than grateful for how beautiful snow can be. As I grumbled again about more snow in the weather forecast I didn't like the feelings it evoked. So, I started searching my memory bank for a memory to balance the resentment I was feeling. It didn't take long to find a wonderful snow memory :-)

Several years ago my friend Vivian and I were walking and talking about the beauty of the snowflakes that were falling on and around us. We discussed how much we loved snow when we were growing up and shared some of the adventures we had. We talked about how magical it was to make Snow Angels on pristine snow and how it was a shame that we were too old to do that now. Then, we stopped and looked directly at each other. In what was our usual fashion we burst out with the identical phrase, "We can do it if we want to!". Then we planned our adventure.

Two weeks later our chance came. We practically ran to the area we had chosen. It was an open space near the Caldwell Road Tim Hortons. Because we walked so early in the morning there were no footprints to mar the perfection of the snow. We carefully walked to the area we had chosen, lay down next to each other, and giggling like children, made our Snow Angels. We then helped each other up, brushed the snow off and laughingly admired our creations.

We had been so focused on our fun that it didn't occur to us that we were being observed. As we made our way to Tim Hortons for our usual hot drinks and chat there were a lot of smiling faces pressed up to the windows. We then entered the shop to a large crowd exclaiming how enjoyable it was to observe our antics. Someone even paid for our drinks.

We got to our regular table and settled in for a nice chat. We both marveled at how much we, and others, enjoyed what had transpired. I knew then that I would always treasure this lovely snow memory.
